Foundational Steps for Sloped Surface Installation
Site preparation is of utmost importance in any artificial grass installation on a slope, especially at first. After clearing away existing grass, weeds, rocks and debris to create a clean canvas for our project.
Next we establish a stable perimeter using treated timbers installed along the top edge of sloped areas firmly secured using nails as anchor points and then similarly situated timbers around the perimeter to form secure frames to keep turf in its place over time and ensure longevity and stability during its existence.
Sub-Base Construction and Compaction
Once we’ve secured our perimeter, the next step in creating an effective sub-base is creating an adequate sub-base that offers firmness, levelness and drainage to support turfgrass growth. Incorporating Type 1 aggregate in an even layer at approximately 2-3 inch depth.
On very steep slopes, manual tamping may be required in order to secure aggregate to the hillside and prevent it from simply sliding off. We then spread a layer of granite dust across the aggregate – this fine material fills any small gaps and creates an exceptionally smooth surface – before using heavy timber pieces as manual compactors in order to compress this fine dust further into its base – an effective approach suitable for slopes where regular plate compactors cannot safely or effectively be utilized.
Installation of Weed Barrier and Turf
Once our foundation is finished, we install an impermeable weed membrane across the area in which we will lay turf to stop any unwanted plants from emerging through it, while still permitting proper drainage of excess moisture from draining away properly. This membrane serves two essential purposes – stopping any unwanted growth while permitting water drainage properly away.
Contrary to flat surfaces, membrane installation on sloped areas requires extra consideration so it stays put without moving around too much. Once this has been successfully accomplished, we can then start the challenging but rewarding task of installing artificial grass itself. Installing artificial turf on slopes requires close consideration and careful installation. We begin by aligning and securely nailing down our turf at the top of slope and heavily nailing into timbers at its top edge – this prevents its weighty roll from rolling back down, giving a professional start and guaranteeing straight, even surfaces.
Once the turf has been laid out, its next step should be addressing seams where different sections meet and adhesive bond them together securely using special joining tape and strong glue.
Galvanized nails may be necessary until glue cures completely; this step is especially essential when installing artificial turf on slopes as seams might not always lie flat; using nails ensures smooth seam bonds for slope installations as no two areas may lie completely level at installation time.
We then nail its perimeter onto its surrounding timber frame frame ensuring all edges remain neatly tucked and secure for an unified and resistant installation that does not allow shifting during installation process. This meticulous process ensures surface unification without shifting.
Finishing Touches: Sand and Power Brushing
Once the turf has been installed, we apply an ample layer of kiln-dried sand across its entirety as part of its finishing touches to give a professional, flawless appearance. This sand infill serves multiple functions that may benefit our turf installation project. Sand helps weigh down and secure artificial grass to its base while simultaneously giving artificial grass blades more support, creating an appealing full appearance.
We then utilize an electric power brush to work it deep into its fibers for maximum effectiveness. An essential step of an artificial turf on slopes project, this final stage ensures infill is distributed evenly and blades stand tall – this distinguishes professional installations and gives their final products an impeccable appearance.
