ToggleThe base layers under artificial grass are important for drainage, stability, and weed control. Common base materials include Astro-Cushion, granite dust, crushed stone, and weed membrane.
Infill for Artificial Lawn
What do you put under artificial turf? Infill is the material placed between the grass fibers. It protects the backing, provides drainage, and adds cushioning. Popular choices for infill include silica, rubber infill, and Durafill sand.

What is Beneath Fake Grass? Understanding the Base Layers
- Geotextile Paper/Mesh-Weed Barrier: These mesh membranes keep weeds out of your artificial turf. To protect your lawn, keep the weed fabric at least 100mm thick and overlap it with crushed stone.
- Crushed Aggregate/Gravel: A compact, permeable rock foundation made from crushed aggregate or gravel creates the drainage field. Gravel is compacted at intervals for stability and quick drainage. For artificial grass, 5/8″ minus is typically required, while 3/8″ minus can be used for greenery.
- Weed Membrane: If your site is prone to weeds or you want to prevent them from growing through your artificial grass, a weed membrane can be installed. This barrier can be placed on top of granodust or below the sub-base with the same results. However, it is not recommended for areas where pets frequently use the grass.
- Astro-Cushion: Astro-Cushion is ideal when laying artificial grass over hard surfaces like concrete, decks, or patios. It creates a soft surface, making it great for young children. Astro-Cushion is porous, allowing regular moisture movement, which is essential for artificial grass. Its 10mm thickness meets safety requirements for schools and playgrounds but may not be ideal for pet areas.
- Granite Dust: A solid drainage system is key to ensuring the longevity of artificial grass. Granite dust is highly porous and durable, allowing moisture to pass through. It can be laid down to a depth of up to 25mm, depending on the location. Compact it with a wacker plate to create a durable surface.
- Sub-base: Once the ground is leveled, a thin layer of crushed granite or stone aggregate can be applied for consolidation. A 25mm layer is recommended on a solid base with a drainage system. Geo-textile fabric can be used to prevent weeds. You can also add sand or a shock-absorbing material to improve the feel of the turf. If installing a weed barrier, make sure to pin it down evenly and securely.
- Artificial Grass Infill: Infill refers to the materials placed between the grass fibers. Its main purpose is to help the grass blades stand up after walking and protect the backing from UV radiation. Sand infill also prevents the grass and weed membrane from wrinkling or folding.
- Silica Sand: Silica sand, formed from eroded quartz, helps the blades of artificial grass stand upright. It is commonly used as a filler in commercial applications.
- Rubber Crumb Infill: Rubber is another material used to give artificial grass a more realistic, softer feel. It increases porosity, adds bounce, and helps the blades stay upright.
- Durafill Sand : Durafill sand is designed specifically for artificial grass. With a quartz core, it keeps the grass cool and has anti-microbial properties to help destroy bacteria. Its rounded shape allows for impact absorption without damaging the grass fibers.
